Can Somatic Therapy Help with Anxiety?
If you've been living with anxiety for a while, chances are you've tried a lot of things to make it go away.
Maybe you've practiced deep breathing, repeated positive affirmations, downloaded meditation apps, or spent countless hours trying to think your way out of anxious thoughts. Maybe you've even wondered, "Why do I still feel anxious when I know everything is okay?"
If that question resonates with you, you're not alone.
One of the things I hear most often from clients is, "I know I'm safe, but my body doesn't believe it."
And that's exactly where somatic therapy can help.
Anxiety Doesn't Just Live in Your Mind
When we think about anxiety, we often picture racing thoughts, excessive worry, or overthinking. While those are certainly part of the experience, anxiety is much more than a pattern of thinking.
It's also a nervous system response.
Your body is constantly taking in information from both your environment and your internal world, asking one important question:
Am I safe?
When your nervous system senses danger—whether it's an immediate threat, chronic stress, or unresolved trauma—it automatically shifts into survival mode. This response isn't something you consciously choose. It's your body's way of protecting you.
That's why anxiety often shows up physically before we even recognize what's happening mentally.
You might notice:
A racing heart
Tightness in your chest
Shallow breathing
Muscle tension
Digestive issues
Feeling restless or unable to sit still
Difficulty sleeping
Feeling constantly "on edge"
These symptoms aren't signs that you're weak or broken.
They're signs that your nervous system is working hard to keep you safe.
What Is Somatic Therapy?
Somatic therapy is a body-centered approach that helps you understand and regulate your nervous system.
Rather than focusing only on changing your thoughts, somatic therapy also pays attention to what your body is communicating.
In session, we might become curious about questions like:
What happens in your body when anxiety starts?
Where do you notice it first?
What sensations tell you your nervous system is becoming activated?
What helps your body experience even a small sense of safety?
Instead of fighting anxiety or trying to force it away, we begin building your body's capacity to move through it.
Over time, your nervous system learns that it doesn't have to stay in survival mode all the time.
Why Talking About Anxiety Isn't Always Enough
Traditional talk therapy can be incredibly helpful. Understanding your patterns, exploring your experiences, and making sense of your emotions are all important parts of healing.
But sometimes insight alone isn't enough.
You may understand exactly why you're anxious and still feel your heart racing.
You may know that giving a presentation isn't dangerous, but your body reacts as though it is.
This happens because anxiety isn't only stored in our thoughts. It's also reflected in our nervous system's learned patterns of protection.
Somatic therapy works with those patterns by helping your body experience safety—not just understand it intellectually.
What Happens During Somatic Therapy?
Many people imagine body-based therapy involves intense exercises or reliving traumatic experiences.
That's not what somatic therapy looks like.
Sessions are often gentle, collaborative, and paced according to what feels manageable for you.
We might spend time noticing physical sensations, exploring breathing patterns, becoming aware of muscle tension, or recognizing the subtle ways your body responds to stress.
You won't be forced to revisit painful memories before you're ready.
Instead, we focus on helping your nervous system build resilience, flexibility, and a greater capacity to return to a state of regulation after stress.
Can Somatic Therapy Really Help Anxiety?
For many people, yes.
Research continues to show that our bodies and minds are deeply connected, and that addressing the nervous system can be an important part of anxiety treatment.
Clients often tell me they begin to notice changes like:
Feeling calmer without having to force it
Recovering from stress more quickly
Sleeping better
Feeling less reactive in everyday situations
Experiencing fewer panic symptoms
Feeling more connected to themselves and their bodies
Healing doesn't necessarily mean anxiety disappears forever.
Instead, your relationship with anxiety begins to change.
Rather than feeling controlled by it, you begin trusting that your body can move through difficult moments and return to a place of safety.
Is Somatic Therapy Right for You?
Somatic therapy may be a good fit if you:
Feel anxious even when nothing seems "wrong"
Have tried traditional talk therapy but still feel stuck
Notice that anxiety shows up strongly in your body
Have experienced trauma, chronic stress, or difficult relationships
Want to understand your nervous system instead of constantly fighting against it
There isn't one right approach to therapy, and healing looks different for everyone.
For many people, though, learning to listen to their body instead of working against it becomes an important turning point.
You Don't Have to Stay Stuck in Survival Mode
Living with anxiety can be exhausting.
It can leave you feeling disconnected from yourself, constantly scanning for the next problem, or wondering why relaxing feels so difficult.
The good news is that your nervous system is capable of change.
Healing isn't about forcing yourself to "calm down." It's about helping your body discover that safety is possible again.
