Anxiety Isn't Just in Your Head: Why Your Body Won't Let You "Just Relax"
If you've ever been told to "just calm down" or "stop overthinking," you already know it isn't that simple.
Most people who struggle with anxiety aren't choosing to feel anxious. In fact, many people are incredibly self-aware. They understand why they're anxious. They've read the books, listened to the podcasts, practiced positive thinking, and can often explain exactly where their anxiety comes from.
Yet they still feel it.
Maybe their heart races before sending an email. Their shoulders stay tense all day. They can't fall asleep because their mind won't stop scanning for what could go wrong. They feel restless, exhausted, overwhelmed, or like they're constantly waiting for the next problem.
If this sounds familiar, I want you to know something:
There isn't anything wrong with you. Your nervous system is trying to protect you.
Anxiety Is More Than Thoughts
Traditional conversations about anxiety often focus on changing our thinking. While our thoughts certainly play a role, anxiety is also a whole-body experience.
When your nervous system perceives danger—whether it's a real threat, chronic stress, unresolved trauma, or years of living in survival mode—it prepares your body to protect you.
That can look like:
A racing heart
Tightness in your chest
Shallow breathing
Muscle tension
Stomach issues
Feeling constantly "on edge"
Trouble sleeping
Difficulty concentrating
Feeling like you can never truly relax
Theese are signs that your nervous system believes it needs to stay alert.
Why Logic Doesn't Always Make Anxiety Go Away
One of the most frustrating parts of anxiety is knowing logically everything will be or is okay while your body continues to react as if it’s not.
You might tell yourself:
"Everything is okay."
"Nothing bad is happening."
"I'm probably overreacting."
But your body doesn't always respond to logic.
That's because the nervous system processes safety differently than the thinking part of the brain. If your body has learned through repeated stress, overwhelming experiences, or trauma that the world feels unpredictable, it may continue responding with anxiety long after the danger has passed.
What Is Somatic Therapy?
Somatic therapy is a body-based approach to healing that recognizes the connection between your mind, body, and nervous system.
Instead of only talking about anxiety, we begin noticing how anxiety shows up inside your body.
We might explore:
Where do you notice anxiety physically?
What sensations come up first?
When do you begin feeling activated?
What helps your body feel even 2% safer?
Rather than forcing anxiety away, we gently build your nervous system's capacity to experience safety, peace, calm, and a sense of being settled again.
Over time, your body learns something new:
It doesn't have to stay in survival mode all the time.

Signs Your Nervous System May Be Stuck in Survival Mode
Many people don't realize their anxiety has become their body's default setting.
You might notice:
You always expect the worst.
You have trouble relaxing, even during downtime.
You're constantly busy because slowing down feels uncomfortable.
You feel guilty resting.
Loud noises or unexpected changes easily startle you.
You struggle to feel present.
You replay conversations long after they've happened.
You feel emotionally exhausted but physically unable to slow down.
These experiences don't necessarily mean something is wrong with you.
They may simply mean your nervous system has been working overtime for a long time.
Healing Doesn't Mean Never Feeling Anxiety Again
One misconception about therapy is that the goal is to eliminate anxiety completely.
The goal isn't to never feel anxious.
The goal is to help your nervous system become more flexible.
Instead of staying stuck in fight, flight, freeze, or shutdown, your body learns how to move through stress and return to a place of regulation more easily.
Many clients notice they still experience stressful moments, but those moments don't take over their entire day—or week.
They recover more quickly.
They feel more connected to themselves.
They begin trusting their bodies again.
